William Kirwan on CNBC: Financial Model for College Sports Is Unsustainable

Knight Commission co-chair William “Brit” Kirwan appeared on CNBC’s Street Signs on January 7, 2010, with Bob Beaudine, CEO of Eastman & Beaudine. The conversation was about the high compensation of major Division I-Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) college football coaches, including Nick Saban at the University of Alabama and Mack Brown at the University of Texas at Austin – both of whom will appear in the Bowl Championship Series title game this evening. Kirwan shared findings from the recent presidential survey, in which most presidents agreed the current financial model of college sports is unsustainable, and that 100 of 120 institutions in Division I-FBS must subsidize the cost of athletics.
