The Washington Post published an article on the NCAA’s diversity initiatives discussed at the May 1 meeting of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics.
The article focused on the NCAA’s recent voluntary “Pledge and Commitment to Promoting Diversity and Gender Equity in Intercollegiate Athletics,” and noted that 30 percent of NCAA member institutions had yet to sign it. As a result of the Washington Post examination and its outreach to 12 institutions, 10 of them have now signed the pledge. The story also described how former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue, a current Knight Commission member, gave a behind-the-scenes look at how the league unanimously approved the Rooney Rule.
Based on NCAA data, the Knight Commission presented graphics showing little change in the racial and gender diversity of football and basketball coaches in NCAA Division 1 FBS and FCS football, and Division 1 men’s and women’s basketball.
