Jonathan Mariner

Former Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Major League Baseball

Mariner is a private investor, entrepreneur, and independent board member on a number of corporate boards, having recently retired following 23 years working in professional sports. Just prior to retiring, he was appointed by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred to serve as Chief Investment Officer of Major League Baseball. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing approximately $2 billion in combined league-wide pension assets, and MLB’s strategic investment funds. He also served as president of the league’s captive insurance company, BASES, which provides property and casualty insurance coverage to all 30 teams and ballparks.

Mariner spent the previous 12 ½ years serving as executive vice president and Chief Financial Officer of MLB where, in addition to his responsibilities for overseeing the league’s overall treasury, budgeting, financial reporting, and risk management activities, his duties also included managing MLB’s $2 billion league-wide credit facility; providing quarterly updates at MLB Owners’ Meetings on the industry’s financial health; and overseeing all Club-level league required financial reporting through the team CFOs. Mr. Mariner graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.S. degree in Accounting; received his MBA degree from the Harvard Business School; and is a former Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
